Poppies in a Field

A simple–yet surprisingly sophisticated project, inspired by Mary Cassatt and French Impressionism

This bonus lesson for Artisan Monthly subscribers features a simple, yet surprisingly sophisticated project inspired by the great Impressionist, Mary Cassatt!

Mary Cassatt (1839-1906) was an American artist associated with the movement called French Impressionism. Cassatt lived much of her adult life in France. Although she did not have children of her own, she is famous for her paintings of dedicated mothers and vibrant children (fathers appear in her work too).

Some things you'll learn with this bundle: gain understanding of foreground, middle ground and background as you create a traditional landscape painting. Use oil pastels to mimic the color and texture of oil paints (but with way less mess!) and add personal details to the land and people as you modify the template to suit your individual taste and imagination!

Included with this Bonus bundle:

  • A printable template to jump start the lesson*
  • Full-color mini art history book about Cassatt with rhyming text
  • Step-by-step, premium video demonstrating techniques and concepts
  • Printable Masterpiece Frame design to color, cut and use to display your finished art

*More advanced young artists may wish to draw their own template from scratch. In this case, you can still print our template as a reference.

*Our templates are not coloring pages; they're simply a few strategically drawn lines to help kids gain confidence as they create well-proportioned artwork in the footsteps of Great Masters.

Each month, 2-4 unique art projects are digitally delivered to our subscribers, accessible from any computer or mobile device. Lessons are thoughtfully curated around a theme, and incorporate art history, a variety of materials and techniques, and easy-to-implement projects.

Materials you'll need: oil pastels (you can substitute colored pencils or markers if you prefer), colored pencils, a regular writing pencil, and the template printed on standard paper. Optional: print the Masterpiece Frame template (included) so you can display your finished art with style!
